Eon The Mod Kicks Off ‘Make Ubuntu Great Again Tour’ in Johannesburg

Johannesburg – This weekend, the city is set to host an extraordinary evening filled with poetry, electronic sounds, and vibrant culture.

Eon The Mod, the unique electric poetry ensemble featuring spoken word artist and Poetry Slam champion Ewok, will be making their debut at the Collectors’ Collective Record Bar (CCRB) on Friday, 22 May 2026, as part of the finale of the “Make UBUNTU Great Again Tour” (MUGA Tour).

Produced by 9II5, a respected music event initiative, the evening promises an immersive, Bohemian-inspired environment that emphasizes sound quality, intimacy, and authentic creative energy.

At the center of the MUGA Tour is Ewok, whose impactful and socially conscious poetry draws inspiration from real-life experiences and the urgent challenges of a changing world.

His powerful words harmonize beautifully with the improvised electronic soundscapes crafted by French modular musician and composer Charles Amblard, with the sonic backdrop expertly refined by sound designer and engineer Vincent Hoppe.

This trio boasts more than 30 years of combined performance experience, having graced stages from intimate venues to major festivals.

The Make UBUNTU Great Again Tour marks the first time this remarkable project will perform in South Africa, with Johannesburg serving as its final stop.

Ewok expressed his excitement for the upcoming performance, stating: “It’s been an eventful week with Charles and Vincent jumping right into band rehearsals.

“We’re ready to shine.

“At some point, you need to recognize that you’ve given it your all and let things unfold naturally.

“This is that moment. Here we go, here you come, there it is.”

The MUGA Tour is firmly rooted in the band’s conscious, socio-political perspective, advocating art as an essential player in the global movement for eco-social justice.

9II5 has designed the Johannesburg event to resemble a cozy poetry jam session, complete with couch seating, soft lighting, greenery, rugs, and artwork, creating an atmosphere that values sound quality over loudness and connection over spectacle.

The lineup of supporting acts has been carefully curated to complement every aspect of Eon The Mod’s performance. Featured artists include:

Funkedelik:

KZN-born, JHB-based DJ Sithembile Mbonyana will set the tone for the evening with neo-classic soul and lo-fi beats, establishing a warm, fluid foundation.

Mak Manaka:

Soweto-born poet and globe-trotter Maakomele R. Manaka will present an electrifying slam poetry performance.

A four-time published poet, he has shared the stage with Presidents and represented South Africa at the 2006 FIFA World Cup closing ceremony.

Freshly Pressed White Tees:

PJ & Plonk are set to deliver a live electronic show that fuses music with storytelling.

Xabiso, God & YU:

Award-winning poet Xabiso Vili, alongside guitarist Zelizwe Mthembu (The Brother Moves On), will blend spoken word with bluesy guitar, transforming poetry into music and music into prayer.

9II5 Soundsystem (RobthaBanka): The resident selector from 9II5 will keep the energy flowing between performances, unifying the night.
