Ouaddou: The PSL’s Competitiveness is on the Rise

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou highlights the increasing competitiveness of the Betway Premiership, especially following his team’s defeat to Sekhukhune United in their opening match on Saturday.

The reigning champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, also faced challenges, securing only a 1-1 draw against Chippa United earlier that day.

Ouaddou asserts that these outcomes reflect the heightened competition within the league.

“These results showcase the continuous improvement and growing challenge of the PSL,” Ouaddou stated.

“Each club is working hard to enhance their organization. The results indicate that all teams are eager to vie for victory, and the notion of underdogs is fading within this league.”

Ouaddou’s remarks illustrate a notable change in the league’s dynamics, with every club keen to make its mark.

Despite the setback, Ouaddou commended his team’s efforts, acknowledging that they performed well but missed crucial opportunities.

“In football, if you’re not efficient in front of goal, one chance for your opponent can result in a goal,” he noted.

“This doesn’t imply that the players underperformed. A review of the match will reveal numerous positives.”

“The essential takeaway is that scoring is critical for achieving success.”

The defeat to Sekhukhune was unexpected, particularly after the Pirates’ strong second-place finish last season. This isn’t the first time the Buccaneers lost their opening match; they faced a similar situation in the 2023/24 season but rebounded well.

Last season, Sundowns commanded the league with a substantial lead, but this campaign has begun differently, with neither squad achieving a win in their opening match.

The Buccaneers are preparing to travel to Free State for a clash against Marumo Gallants, Ouaddou’s former team, in their next league game on Tuesday.

Following that, they will meet Sundowns in the first leg of the MTN8. Meanwhile, Sekhukhune aims to build on their winning streak as they host TS Galaxy at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday.
