Showing Self-Compassion: Mbuthuma’s Response to Critics Following the Pirates’ Controversy

Orlando Pirates forward Yanela Mbuthuma highlights the importance of strikers not to place excessive pressure on themselves after responding to criticism with a brace against Kruger United at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old has faced a tough beginning to the season, with difficulties in finishing clear chances leading to some fans voicing their discontent.

Mbuthuma has appeared as a starter in every game since the season kicked off. Despite his favorable positioning on the field, he has struggled to find the back of the net, which has added pressure on him. Nevertheless, numerous fans have continued to offer their unwavering support during his challenging phases.

Rather than succumbing to the pressure from critics, Mbuthuma believes that strikers should remain patient, as scoring opportunities will come.

“I’m truly grateful that some fans have stood by me and supported me,” he told Pirates TV.

“Being a striker presents its challenges, so it’s crucial not to create excessive pressure on yourself.

“As a forward, every game is different, and chances will continuously come your way. That’s how I managed to score against Kruger United, and it brings me immense joy.”

Mbuthuma’s performance against Kruger United was a notable improvement compared to his last two appearances.

During the weekend, he played a pivotal role in Pirates’ semifinal victory over Sekhukhune United. While he didn’t find the net, his contributions were significant, as he notched up two assists.

Pirates are now gearing up for the CAF Champions League, set to travel to Mauritius on Sunday for the first leg of the preliminary round against La Cure Sylvester.

As he approaches this weekend’s Champions League match, Mbuthuma heads in with heightened confidence after playing a part in four goals across his last two games. His previous two goals in last season’s Champions League should also bolster his self-confidence ahead of the encounter in Mauritius.

The former Richards Bay talent scored against Lioli FC and Saint-Eloi Lupopo last season, although Pirates were unfortunately eliminated by Lupopo in the second preliminary round.
