Cape Town Airport: Kenya Airways Flight’s Successful Recovery After Tire Failure Garners High Praise

Cape Town – The effective recovery of Kenya Airways flight (KQ784), which encountered a tyre failure during landing and became immobilized on the runway at Cape Town International Airport, has garnered substantial recognition.

This event, affecting various other flights, occurred on Tuesday, 4 August 2026.

“The Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) extends its sincere appreciation to all personnel and stakeholders involved in the prompt management and recovery efforts at Cape Town International Airport,” stated Khulu Phasiwe, ATNS spokesperson, on Wednesday, 5 August 2026.

“In response to the tyre malfunction involving the Kenya Airways aircraft, Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) swiftly closed the runway, which was successfully reopened last night before 20:00, allowing affected airlines to resume their operations and adjust their schedules.”

ATNS Chairperson Adv. Zola Majavu expressed gratitude to the Air Traffic Controllers and Air Traffic Flow Specialists who managed traffic during the disruption, promoting collaborative decision-making and ensuring the smooth recovery of affected flights under challenging conditions.

Moreover, Acting Chief Executive Officer of ATNS, Matome Moholola, remarked: “We also acknowledge the Air Traffic Services Units that effectively managed diverted aircraft and extended their service hours as needed.”

“Your flexibility, professionalism, and support were crucial in safeguarding the overall network and achieving a favorable outcome.”

Moholola added: “We also thank the Central Airspace Management Unit, ACSA, airlines, airport operational teams, the Aeronautical Information Management Unit, the Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre, and the Operations Management team for their leadership and teamwork in conducting a successful and visible recovery operation.

“This incident highlighted the significance of collaboration, coordinated decision-making, and operational commitment.”

Spokesperson Phasiwe noted that ATNS appreciates the numerous messages of support and praise regarding the professional and efficient management of flight landings and departures, even amidst challenging operational conditions.
