Banyana Banyana Clinch WAFCON Knockout Stage Berth with 1-0 Victory Over Burkina Faso
Casablanca – Striker Thembi Kgatlana of Banyana Banyana scored the only goal of the match against Burkina Faso on Tuesday night in Casablanca, Morocco, securing South Africa’s place in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tournament.
Kgatlana found the back of the net in the 21st minute, igniting hopes of progressing to the next round from second position in Group B.
This goal lifted South Africa from fourth to second place, and after the initial score, Banyana Banyana showcased their defensive prowess.
The second half concentrated on managing the game and keeping a clean sheet for Banyana through the full 90 minutes.
However, there were nerve-wracking moments during the seven minutes of stoppage time.
In the end, Kgatlana’s goal was enough for the team to advance to the WAFCON knockout stage.
In another Group B fixture, Ivory Coast defeated Tanzania 2-1, finishing in first place.
Consequently, Tanzania and Burkina Faso are on their way home.
Meanwhile, the South African government has commended Banyana Banyana for their “impressive victory over Burkina Faso.”
