BYD Expands SHARK 6 Line-Up with New 350 kW Performance Model

Johannesburg – BYD Auto South Africa has broadened its SHARK 6 lineup with the introduction of the new BYD SHARK 6 Performance, a more powerful flagship variant.

The SHARK 6 Performance combines 350 kW of hybrid power, a towing capacity of 3 500 kg, and advanced technology, positioning it as one of the most sophisticated bakkies in South Africa.

In addition to the existing SHARK 6 Premium, this new Performance model offers South African customers another option, featuring superior power and towing capabilities paired with state-of-the-art plug-in hybrid technology, all-wheel-drive performance, and a luxurious, feature-rich cabin.

At its heart, the SHARK 6 Performance integrates BYD’s latest DMO Super Hybrid system, utilizing a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine along with electric motors at both the front and rear.

This system delivers a peak output of 350 kW and 700 Nm, enabling the SHARK 6 Performance to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 5.5 seconds.

Its maximum braked towing capacity reaches 3 500 kg, making it perfect for customers who often tow boats, caravans, trailers, or construction equipment.

“The SHARK 6 has set new standards for bakkies, artfully combining plug-in hybrid technology, strong performance, and everyday usability in one of South Africa’s most competitive segments,” remarks Steve Chang, Managing Director of BYD Auto South Africa.

“The new SHARK 6 Performance enhances this with increased power, better towing capabilities, and cutting-edge technology.”

“At the same time, the SHARK 6 Premium remains a vital part of our lineup, offering customers the opportunity to select the model that best suits their lifestyle, towing requirements, and budget.”

Plug-in hybrid performance for everyday use

The SHARK 6 Performance is equipped with a 29.58 kWh battery, allowing for an electric-only driving range of up to 80 km.

When fully charged and with a complete 60-litre fuel tank, the vehicle can achieve a combined WLTP range of up to 640 km.

The plug-in hybrid system enables many short daily trips to be completed using electric power, while the petrol engine provides versatile options for longer journeys, towing, and activities in areas with limited charging access.

The vehicle supports AC charging at around 7 kW, with a full charge taking approximately four hours.

Additionally, DC charging capabilities support rates of up to approximately 55 kW, facilitating a charging time of roughly 35 minutes under optimal conditions.

Designed for work, family, and adventure

Both SHARK 6 variants feature BYD’s DMO, or Dual Mode Off-Road, all-wheel-drive system.

This system synchronizes the turbocharged petrol engine and the front and rear electric motors to deliver responsive power, enhanced traction, and all-terrain capability.

In addition, the SHARK 6 Performance includes a Crawl Mode, which automatically manages the vehicle’s speed, power output, and braking while traversing difficult terrains.

This feature allows drivers to focus solely on steering as they navigate rocky paths, sand, mud, steep inclines, or low-speed off-road conditions.

With a ground clearance of 230 mm, 18-inch wheels, and all-wheel drive, the SHARK 6 Performance shines in challenging work sites, weekend adventures, and family trips.

Moreover, Vehicle-to-Load technology improves practicality by enabling users to draw power from the vehicle’s battery.

Power outlets in the load bin can power devices and appliances like portable fridges, lighting, coffee machines, and other gadgets while camping, working remotely, or enjoying time away from traditional power sources.

Top-tier technology and connectivity

Inside, the SHARK 6 Performance retains the spacious and premium cabin of the SHARK 6 range while introducing several model-specific enhancements.

A newly designed column-mounted gear lever improves the center console layout, resulting in a more streamlined cabin design.

The interior boasts a sizable 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen, electrically adjustable front seats, and a comprehensive array of comfort and technology features.

The vehicle incorporates Google Automotive Services, providing built-in Google Maps navigation and access to select applications via the Google Play Store.

Drivers can navigate and use select Google applications directly from the infotainment system, reducing the need for a connected smartphone.

Two SHARK 6 variants

The SHARK 6 Performance complements the existing SHARK 6 Premium, offering customers a choice of two plug-in hybrid options.

While both models boast advanced technology, a luxury cabin, and an electrified driving experience, the new flagship features a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, upgraded system output, increased towing capacity, and added technological offerings.

The BYD SHARK 6 Performance will be available in four exterior colors: Outback Orange, Obsidian Black, Snowy White, and Atlantis Grey.

The introduction of the SHARK 6 Performance further strengthens BYD’s expanding New Energy Vehicle portfolio in South Africa, appealing to customers desiring greater towing capability and performance without compromising everyday usability.

Pricing and availability

The BYD SHARK 6 Performance can be ordered through BYD dealerships nationwide, starting at R1 149 900.

The vehicle comes with a five-year/100,000 km warranty, a five-year/100,000 km maintenance plan, and an eight-year/200,000 km battery warranty, subject to BYD South Africa’s standard terms and conditions.
