Medicare 24 R360M Tender Under Fire: 9 Police Officers Linked to Bid Committee Suspended
Pretoria – Nine officers from the Bid Evaluation Committee have been suspended by the South African Police Service (SAPS) for allegedly overlooking discrepancies and awarding a multi-million-rand tender to Medicare 24.
The contract with Medicare 24, which is currently being investigated by the Madlanga Commission, was a R360 million deal granted in 2024 to provide health services for police personnel.
However, this contract has been mired in serious accusations of corruption, fraud, and improper procurement, leading to its cancellation in 2025 and the arrest of 12 senior police officials.
Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, the proprietor of Medicare 24, is currently in custody awaiting trial on multiple charges.

Matlala has faced multiple denials for bail related to the alleged attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend, socialite Tebogo Thobejane, in 2023.
Regarding the latest events surrounding the disputed awarding of the Medicare tender, police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe announced today, Friday, 5 June 2026, that nine individuals have been suspended pending disciplinary and related investigations.
“The SAPS is committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and ethical conduct in all its operations,” Brigadier Mathe stated.
“As this matter is still under investigation, the SAPS will refrain from making any additional comments at this stage.”
