Amazon Introduces Prime in South Africa for Only R59 Monthly
The worldwide e-commerce giant, Amazon, has stepped up its game in the South African retail market by introducing its premium subscription service, Amazon Prime, in the region.
This introduction marks a strategic decision precisely two years after Amazon first entered the local market. By providing a package that includes unlimited zero-minimum delivery, global video streaming, and cloud gaming for a monthly fee of R59, or a yearly payment of R399 (a significant 44% discount), Amazon seeks to engage with the everyday spending patterns of South African consumers.
Unlimited delivery and local content integration
The main goal of this local subscription initiative is to proactively address typical delivery challenges faced by consumers. Unlike rivals that set minimum spending limits for free delivery, Amazon offers unlimited same-day delivery at no cost on eligible items for orders placed before noon in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Pretoria, alongside unlimited next-day delivery for other major cities, effectively eliminating purchasing barriers.

Jamil Ghani, vice president of Amazon Prime, noted that the subscription model is tailored to challenge traditional retail norms: “We’ve seen how Prime transforms the shopping and entertainment experiences for members worldwide – from India to Brazil, Egypt to Australia. In every new market we’ve entered, Prime has become an essential part of members’ daily lives, helping them save time and money while providing access to premium entertainment.”
To boost its localized offering, Amazon is merging its global entertainment services with noteworthy South African content.
Robert Koen, Amazon’s managing director for sub-Saharan Africa, described the launch as a strategic, long-term effort to establish a presence within the local economy: “The introduction of Prime is an exciting milestone in our South African journey, emphasizing our commitment to becoming an integral part of South Africans’ everyday lives by delivering enhanced convenience, savings, and entertainment.”
The countdown to South Africa’s first ‘Prime Day’
Alongside no-cost logistics and video streaming, Amazon is bringing its global sales strategies to the local market. The company has announced South Africa’s inaugural “Prime Day”, Amazon’s exclusive annual global shopping event, set for 23 to 29 June 2026.
Members will also benefit from permanent early access to competitive shopping seasons later in the year, including Black Friday.

The ecosystem also encompasses Amazon Luna, a cloud gaming service featuring titles like Hogwarts Legacy and Fortnite, as well as a complimentary monthly Twitch channel subscription to engage younger digital audiences.
To lower the entry barriers, Amazon is offering an immediate 30-day free trial on its dedicated local portal, supported by secure online payment processing for all standard South African debit and credit cards.
