Madlanga Commission Hearing Postponed Due to Crime Intelligence Officer’s Sick Leave
The Madlanga Commission had to postpone a scheduled hearing when a police officer from the Crime Intelligence unit reported being unwell, disrupting Thursday’s testimony agenda.
The officer was supposed to testify as part of the commission’s ongoing inquiry. However, the proceedings were adjusted after officials were informed of the unexpected illness.

This delay has contributed to the growing frustration among commissioners regarding the increasing instances of witnesses failing to appear due to health concerns, prompting discussions about imposing stricter oversight measures.
Increased Scrutiny of Medical Certificates at Madlanga Commission
Commission members are increasingly worried about what appears to be a pattern of last-minute medical absences. One proposal being considered would mandate that medical professionals verify their assessments for witnesses prior to the commission.
Co-commissioner Sesi Baloyi noted that this issue “needs attention as it’s becoming habitual.”
The matter gained traction earlier this week when evidence leader Mathew Chaskalson SC questioned the legitimacy of a medical certificate submitted for another witness. The witness’s legal representatives, Matlala Attorneys, have been instructed to provide a valid and satisfactory medical certificate by Thursday.

Commissioners warned that failure to comply could result in the doctor who issued the certificate being subpoenaed to testify and clarify their assessment.
“We were supposed to have a police officer from Crime Intelligence, but the officer has fallen ill. We’ll hear a postponement application at 10 am,” said Michaels.

No information was provided regarding the nature of the officer’s illness or whether their testimony will be rescheduled.
Allegations Involving SAPS and Judiciary Under Review
The postponement comes as the commission continues to investigate allegations involving politicians, police officers, and purported cartel members accused of infiltrating the South African Police Service and the Judiciary.
The anticipated testimony from the Crime Intelligence officer was expected to contribute to the inquiry’s investigation of these allegations.
This latest event follows closely monitored testimony from suspended SAPS deputy national commissioner Lt-Gen Shadrack Sibiya. During his appearance, Sibiya acknowledged knowing alleged cartel figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and invited him to a family gathering while denying any claims of corruption or undue influence.
He also denied allegations that he had instructed the sharing of sensitive police documents, including a warrant involving blogger Musa Khawula.
A new witness is expected to testify on Thursday as the inquiry moves forward.
