How Institutions Will Propel Ethereum Toward Greater Decentralization

Vitalik Buterin, one of the founders of Ethereum, expressed that the institutions’ quest for self-governance will encourage decentralization rather than inhibit it.

Summary

  • Buterin highlights that institutions prefer self-custody and autonomous staking.
  • Oversight by institutions regarding wallets and staking may strengthen Ethereum’s decentralization.
  • He expects advancements in privacy tech and zero-knowledge proofs alongside regulatory changes.

In a conversation on Farcaster, Buterin suggested that the demands from corporate and governmental bodies for self-custody wallets and independent staking will ultimately support Ethereum’s decentralization instead of consolidating power.

“Institutions will aim to control their own wallets, and if they stake ETH, they will desire independent staking. This can positively influence Ethereum’s staking decentralization,” Buterin stated.

This viewpoint challenges the notion that institutional adoption necessarily leads to centralization.

Institutional self-custody reduces reliance on others

Buterin analyzed institutional behavior using game theory, positing that the optimal strategy is to retain control over internal activities while minimizing outside influence.

“Institutions are often composed of highly skilled professionals who understand these issues better than the average person and are more driven to take action,” he pointed out.

The shift towards reducing dependence on external trust will intensify as businesses and agencies seek better assurances about their operations. Nonetheless, Buterin stressed the distinction between institutions minimizing their dependencies and undermining user sovereignty.

“This is what the Ethereum community must advocate for and create tools to help others to achieve,” he declared.

Buterin noted the contrasting strategies of institutions: the EU endorsing open-source software while simultaneously pushing for legislation that enforces encryption backdoors through Chat Control.

The US government utilizes Signal for secure communication, even with the Patriot Act still active.

Stablecoin issuers will aim for governance diversity

Buterin envisions European asset issuers gravitating towards blockchains that limit US influence, while American issuers will pursue freedom from European oversight.

Governments are likely to champion stricter Know Your Customer requirements, yet privacy solutions will continue progressing thanks to cypherpunk innovations. “The more probable scenario is that non-KYC’d assets will exist, and the capacity to use them with significant privacy will grow,” Buterin noted.

He also anticipated a rising interest in zero-knowledge proofs related to the origin of funds in the coming decade, prompting ideological debates regarding suitable actions.

“I don’t believe being a cypherpunk necessitates outright opposition to institutions,” Buterin concluded. “Instead, I advocate for a policy of transparency that institutions often employ against one another: collaboration that benefits both sides, while firmly safeguarding our interests.”
