Bekkersdal Tavern Shooting: At Least 9 Fatalities and Numerous Injuries
Bekkersdal – At least nine people have been fatally shot by attackers at the KwaNoxolo tavern in the Tambo region of Bekkersdal.
Witnesses reported seeing a white minibus taxi carrying approximately 12 individuals and a silver sedan, specifically a Toyota Etios, at the location.
Shortly before 01:00, several armed assailants emerged from the vehicles and opened fire on the patrons.
The attackers also rummaged through the crowd, seizing cell phones and other valuables.
According to Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlande Mathe, ten more individuals were injured during the indiscriminate gunfire early Sunday morning, December 21, 2025.
“Some victims were randomly shot on the streets by unknown gunmen,” Brigadier Mathe stated.
Gauteng Commissioner Major General Kekana is currently on-site.
No arrests have been made at this time.
The reason for the shooting remains uncertain.
Nevertheless, the Gauteng SA Police Service’s Serious and Violent Crime Investigations, along with the Crime Detection Tracing Unit, have launched a manhunt for the suspects involved.
