Willemse, Player of the Match, Shifts Attention to Ireland

After enduring a relentless series of high and through balls while providing outstanding defensive support and analyzing Italy’s kicking strategies, Damian Willemse showcased a stellar man-of-the-match performance, leading the Springboks to a 32-14 win in Turin.

In the wake of this intense match, the two-time World Champion reflected on one of the season’s toughest Tests, while also focusing on their upcoming opponent, Ireland!

He expressed appreciation for the accolade, particularly considering the match’s intensity, while also praising his teammates.

“It was an incredibly tough game, and being recognized as man of the match – especially amid the strong performance from the forwards and the tight five, particularly after Franco’s early exit – is immensely meaningful. We had to push ourselves and adapt our strategies on the field,” he shared.

“Ultimately, we are very proud of the resilience and character everyone displayed, and we owe our thanks to the coaching staff for their planning when we had to play with 14 men. The performances of those who haven’t had much game time give us great confidence and pride.”

Italy exerted significant pressure with their kicking tactics, but Willemse attributes his progress to solid coaching support behind the scenes.

“I’m grateful to the coaches for their mentorship in my development. Competing in back-to-back matches has been vital for my confidence. Missing out last year makes this return a tremendous honor, and donning the Springbok jersey again is everything to me. My role is to meet my responsibilities, and I’ve received tremendous support from many players.”

Willemse highlighted that trust is crucial for unity and teamwork within the squad and coaching staff, emphasizing that players have faith in the coaches’ strategies, while the coaches rely on the players to implement them.

“Trust is essential,” he asserted. “At halftime, the coaches provided us with clear instructions for the second half. Italy applied pressure in those opening ten minutes, but we stuck to the plan – it takes teamwork and trust to achieve what we accomplished out there.”

When discussing motivation, the Springbok fullback remarked, “This team consistently meets challenges head-on and illustrates the importance of representing this badge and our families. It’s hard to convey just how much this means to us.”

As their schedule intensifies with the match against Ireland approaching, Willemse acknowledged the significance of that encounter.

“We’re eager to face Ireland, but we must relish this victory first. Winning at Aviva Stadium is a goal for us. It’s going to be a significant match, and we’re excited to compete there.”

In the last two games, the four-time World Champions have witnessed a player receiving a permanent red card. Willemse recognizes that tenacity, resilience, and perseverance will be essential again in next Saturday’s matchup.

“We’ll need every squad member, whether on the field or off, along with all our coaches, to ensure a positive outcome. We understand Ireland is a world-class team with an excellent coaching staff. We will refine our strategies with the Dublin challenge in mind.”
