Malema’s Bail Extended After Conviction for Violating Firearms Control Act
East London – Julius Malema, the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters, has had his bail extended until next year following his conviction for violating the Firearms Control Act.
On Wednesday, 1 October 2025, after three days of deliberation, the East London Magistrate’s Court found Malema guilty.
His bail is now set to expire on 23 January 2026, when he is scheduled to return to court for a pre-sentencing hearing.
The case was initiated by AfriForum, which lodged criminal charges against Malema in August 2018.
Malema is accused of discharging several shots during the EFF’s fifth anniversary celebrations on 28 July 2018 at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane, near East London.
He faced allegations of firing a weapon in a populated or public area without just cause, as well as unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Malema denies these accusations, claiming he was seen using a toy gun.
His co-defendant, security officer Adriaan Snyman, has been cleared of all charges.
In reaction to the ruling, Jacques Broodryk, AfriForum’s Chief Spokesperson for Community Safety, stated that justice has finally been served, despite the long delays and irregularities throughout the case.
“The evidence clearly indicated that Malema committed multiple serious offenses under the Firearms Control Act, and the verdict reinforces that individuals who think they are above the law will eventually be held accountable, regardless of the length of the process,” Broodryk remarked.
After the court proceedings, Malema informed his supporters of his intention to appeal the guilty verdict following his sentencing.
He expressed his willingness to take the matter to the Constitutional Court if necessary.
