Barker Attributes Chiefs’ Loss to Unfortunate Red Card Decisions

Steve Barker, head coach of Stellenbosch FC, voiced his exasperation, stating that yet another red card influenced their defeat against Kaizer Chiefs. This follows a 2-0 loss to Chiefs in the Betway Premiership match on Sunday.

The pivotal moment happened early in the match at Athlone Stadium when Stellenbosch’s Siviwe Nkwali was shown a red card in the 13th minute, compelling the team to compete with only ten players.

Barker expressed his concerns regarding this ongoing issue, noting that his team has struggled against Chiefs lately, despite having performed better in previous encounters.

“Unfortunately, this has become a recurring trend. It wasn’t always this way. We’ve had positive outcomes against them in the past,” Barker stated.

“Right now, it seems they have the upper hand over us. It’s a frustrating situation.”

This latest defeat signifies the fourth consecutive victory for the Amakhosi against Stellenbosch, which includes two league wins and one triumph in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinal last season.

“When we meet them again, we need to find a way to secure a win,” Barker emphasized.

“It honestly feels like a double setback to receive a red card and concede a goal simultaneously.”

“At times, being just 1-0 down with ten men might provide a better opportunity to earn a point than being a man down in a 0-0 scenario, where they emerge victorious.”

“This was a considerable disadvantage for us, and it’s not the first time a red card or similar event against Chiefs has tipped the balance in their favor.”

“It’s not for lack of effort or will to beat them; it just feels as if luck isn’t on our side right now, although we need to improve in certain areas.”

Stellenbosch is now gearing up for their next match against Magesi FC at Seshego Stadium on Wednesday.
