ACSA Declares Major Emergency at Cape Town International Airport

Cape Town – Airports Company South Africa’s Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) has announced the initiation of its thorough Aerodrome Emergency Exercise today, 19 August 2025.

“This crucial safety drill, required biannually, is executed in line with South African aviation regulations and the standards set forth by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO),” ACSA stated in a release to The Bulrushes.

“The exercise reflects ACSA’s continuous commitment to upholding the highest standards of safety and security.

“Its purpose is to evaluate and improve the airport’s readiness in the case of a disaster, ensuring all systems, protocols, and personnel are adequately prepared to respond effectively.”

ACSA noted that the extensive simulation will involve numerous stakeholders including the South African Police Service, the City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management Centre, Fire and Rescue Service, the South African National Defence Force, Metro Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Traffic Police, and other key partners.

“Members of the public should anticipate increased activity in and around the airport area during the exercise,” the statement advised.

ACSA assured the public that this was a planned simulation and not an actual emergency.

“Importantly, normal airport operations will proceed without disruption throughout the exercise,” ACSA confirmed.
