Empowering Women Through Sustainable Tourism: Fostering Job Creation and Economic Growth

As South Africa embarks on its Just Transition, the tourism sector offers a unique opportunity to enhance job creation and drive economic growth. The pandemic has exposed significant vulnerabilities, particularly among women entrepreneurs in remote and underserved areas, highlighting an urgent need for innovative, inclusive, and sustainable enterprise development strategies.

We recognized early on that traditional financing solutions were insufficient in addressing the challenges faced by these entrepreneurs. Our commitment required a strategic shift towards engaging a broad range of stakeholders, aligning goals, and fostering deep collaboration with local communities and individuals. Understanding that unified objectives among stakeholders are critical for enacting meaningful, lasting change was essential.

When stakeholders genuinely align in vision and action, the collective power is undeniable.

This goes beyond simple cooperation; it emphasizes co-creation. As challenges arise, ensuring that all decision-makers are fully engaged in the process sustains momentum. Every obstacle becomes a chance to reinforce our collective commitment and adapt our strategies.

This methodology was key to our Women in Tourism Programme. By forming local steering committees with bankers, entrepreneurs, and community leaders, we localized the decision-making process. Each of the 225 selected entrepreneurs received tailored support through personal interviews, ensuring our assistance was both relevant and responsive to their specific situations.

Our phased approach has clearly demonstrated the effectiveness of this comprehensive strategy. By the conclusion of our second phase, which ran for only 18 months, these women-led enterprises had already created 500 new jobs. Moreover, they experienced substantial growth, launching additional properties, exploring new markets, and diversifying their offerings.

Significantly, the entrepreneurs themselves advocated for a third phase, showcasing their ownership and confidence. Launched in 2024, Phase 3 saw them achieve even greater success. Collectively, they have now generated over 1,600 jobs. Their impressive accomplishments have attracted further financial support, securing R65 million in additional funding, R35 million in loans, and R30 million in grants. This backing demonstrates the confidence stakeholders have in their ability to scale operations sustainably.

These outcomes underscore the critical principle we champion: effective enterprise development requires long-term commitment and genuine collaboration. While quick wins are important for immediate motivation, true transformation develops over time, strengthened by sustained efforts. Navigating the complexities of the tourism sector, such as seasonal shifts, infrastructure challenges, and market dynamics, demands ongoing support rather than fleeting interventions.

At Nedbank, we believe that success lies in continuously incorporating insights from our entrepreneurs’ experiences. Human-centered approaches must be flexible, recognizing that universal solutions often fail to deliver lasting results. Our effectiveness stems from immersing ourselves in local contexts, listening actively, and collaboratively tackling challenges with our partners.

Stakeholders are not merely participants; they are engaged collaborators, decision-makers, and active agents of change.

The stories emerging from this programme speak volumes, vividly illustrating the strategic importance of investing in women entrepreneurs in tourism. They embody the resilience, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit essential to South Africa’s sustainable economic future.

As we collectively embrace the Just Transition, our commitment remains steadfast. We are not just funding businesses; we are fostering transformative economic partnerships. Through strategic enterprise financing, robust stakeholder collaboration, and a relentless commitment to long-term, inclusive growth, we are building a resilient tourism sector poised to guide South Africa into a sustainable, equitable future.
