Komphela: Our Influence Reaches Beyond Sundowns
As Mamelodi Sundowns gears up to take on top clubs globally at the FIFA Club World Cup, assistant coach Steve Komphela highlights the significance of representing Africa on this international platform.
The team will stand alongside Al Ahly, Esperance Sportive de Tunis, and Wydad, flying the continent’s flag in this prestigious tournament.
Komphela emphasizes that the Club World Cup is not merely a football event; it serves as a stage for African teams to showcase their distinctive talents and playing style to a worldwide audience.
“Playing entertaining football is vital; it transcends the game itself,” he noted.
“I don’t intend to spark controversy, but it’s essential to recognize that as we head to the Club World Cup, many clubs will be vying for the spotlight.”

“One might wonder about representation; let’s reflect on how many typical African or Black coaches will be present.”
Komphela’s remarks draw attention to the underrepresentation of African coaches at high levels. Nevertheless, he believes that Sundowns’ involvement in the tournament can pave the way for greater visibility of African coaches and players on the international scene.
“This issue extends beyond just the players; it’s also about creating an atmosphere for African coaches to thrive at world-class levels.”
As Sundowns prepares to face prominent teams such as Dortmund, Fluminense, and Ulsan in Group F, Komphela is clear about the team’s aspirations.
“We aim to inspire all African players, not just those affiliated with African clubs, to perceive this as an opportunity akin to a World Cup,” he stated.
“Even if this is the Club World Cup, our mission remains unchanged; we seek to showcase an African product and contend with global rivals.”
Komphela emphasized that Sundowns symbolizes not just a team but the entire African continent.
“As Africans, we should consider the contributions we bring to the global stage. This should be viewed as the African team participating in the Club World Cup, not merely Mamelodi Sundowns,” he declared.
“The reasoning behind this perspective is that when regions like Europe, America, and Asia profile us, they see us as Africans, rather than just Sundowns.”
The former Kaizer Chiefs coach believes Sundowns will be assessed by their African identity and style of play.
“They analyze the characteristics and capabilities of the African team, scrutinizing every detail. We cannot escape our African identity; it will permanently influence our strengths and traits.”
As the tournament draws near, Komphela is optimistic that Sundowns will leave a lasting impression on the global football stage.
“Thus, as we step onto the field, we will embody the essence of African football, holding true to our style of play,” Komphela remarked.
“All African teams not participating in the Club World Cup will have their spirit embodied by us, and we are committed to honoring that legacy.”
With their distinctive style and proud African heritage, Sundowns are set to make a significant impact at the FIFA Club World Cup. As Komphela affirmed, “We strive to showcase an African product and compete with the world.”
The world’s attention will be focused on them, and Sundowns are ready to exhibit the finest of African football.
