Brown: Facing the Barbarians Is Our Greatest Challenge
On Monday, Springbok assistant coach Tony Brown emphasized that the Boks are approaching Saturday’s Qatar Airways Cup match against the Barbarians in Cape Town with a Test-match mentality, aiming to lay a solid groundwork for the new season and to build on their past successes.
Following their impressive second consecutive Rugby World Cup victory in 2023, the Boks achieved 11 wins out of 13 Tests in 2024. Brown noted that the coaching staff believes the team has a clearer understanding of their goals this year compared to last.
This Saturday is set to be pivotal, as it marks the first meet between the Springboks and the Barbarians since 2016 and the first time these teams clash on South African soil.
“This presents a unique challenge like none we’ve faced before, as they have triumphed over many top teams. It will be a great test for us as the season begins,” remarked Brown.
“For us, this feels just like a Test match, so we must deliver our best performance, and our coaching strategies need to be precise to align with the expectations we have for our squad.”

When discussing expectations from the Barbarians, Brown commented: “Recognized for their attacking prowess, they can be quite unpredictable. We need to be ready and train intensely for this match.”
Cheslin Kolbe, awarded South Africa’s Men’s Player of the Year for 2024, expressed his excitement for the upcoming game.
“Although I haven’t faced them yet, I’ve noticed that they’re a robust team with many experienced players. It’s crucial for us to remain composed and prepare as thoroughly as possible,” Kolbe stated.
With rain anticipated for Saturday, Brown acknowledged it might influence the gameplay. Nevertheless, he remains confident in the Springboks’ ability to adapt to wet conditions if necessary.
“Playing an expansive style of rugby in the rain is certainly more challenging, but we are a flexible team,” Brown noted. “It could pose challenges for the Barbarians considering their playing style, but we trust our players understand what is required of them.”
On a lighter note, Kolbe was eager to reunite with his teammates for the international season, adding: “It’s wonderful to be back. We haven’t gathered for six or seven months; it’s thrilling to come together as a group. Plus, being in Cape Town feels like home away from home; it’s always enjoyable to play in the Mother City.”
The Springboks will continue their training on Tuesday and Wednesday, take a day off on Thursday to recover, and complete their preparations with a captains’ run on Friday.
The match is scheduled to kick off at 17:10 and will be broadcast live on SuperSport.
