Douglas Gibson, Respected Former Democratic Alliance Leader, Passes Away at 82

Johannesburg – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of veteran Democratic Alliance (DA) member Douglas Gibson at the age of 82.

“On behalf of the DA, I wish to extend our deepest condolences to the friends and family of an extraordinary South African, Douglas Gibson,” expressed party leader John Steenhuisen on Friday, (9 May 2025).

Douglas was a distinguished politician and public servant, recognized for his role as the Chief Whip of the Democratic Party and subsequently the Democratic Alliance in Parliament, in addition to serving as South Africa’s ambassador to Thailand.

“The positions of Chief Whip and Ambassador truly represented who Douglas was,” lamented Steenhuisen.

“He was a dedicated advocate for freedom in South Africa, and even in his last days, he passionately defended the principles upheld by himself and our party.

‘Moreover, he infused every pursuit with exceptional compassion, maintaining a sense of accessibility and humanity in all his interactions throughout his career.

“Furthermore, he served as an exemplary ambassador for our nation, our party, and the ideals of non-racialism and freedom.”

Steenhuisen added: “If there was ever an individual who embodied the best of our country, our party, and our cherished values, it was Douglas.

“His charm and intelligence allowed him to forge connections with others and identify common ground for collaboration.

“He will be profoundly missed.

“As we carry on the struggle he championed so passionately, striving for a better South Africa, we will make every effort to honor his memory and the significant contributions he made throughout his life to promote a nation of true freedom and vibrant opportunity.”

Although he had retired from active politics, Gibson remained a significant voice on developments within the DA, including its decision to collaborate with the African National Congress in establishing a Government of National Unity.
