Mcebisi Jonas Appointed as Special Envoy to the United States by President Cyril Ramaphosa
Pretoria – President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Mcebisi Jonas as the Special Envoy to the United States of America.
“I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Mcebisi Jonas as my Special Envoy to the United States of America, representing the President and the government of the Republic of South Africa,” President Ramaphosa stated in a release on Monday, (14 April 2025).
“In this role, Mr. Jonas is tasked with promoting South Africa’s diplomatic, trade, and bilateral objectives.
“He will spearhead negotiations, build strategic partnerships, and engage with both U.S. government officials and private-sector leaders to advocate for our nation’s interests.
“A prominent South African figure, Mr. Jonas was one of four Presidential Investment Envoys I appointed in 2018 to stimulate investment in South Africa.”
Having previously served as the Deputy Finance Minister of South Africa, Mr. Jonas brings substantial governmental experience to his diplomatic position.
At the same time, he will continue to serve as the Independent Non-Executive Chairman of the MTN Group, balancing this role with his duties as my Special Envoy.
“This appointment highlights his remarkable career and ongoing commitment to advancing South Africa’s national and economic priorities,” President Ramaphosa remarked.
“For many years, South Africa and the United States of America have shared a significant and strategic relationship.
“In the best interest of our country, our region, and our continent, I am committed to rebuilding and nurturing this relationship with respect, recognizing our sovereign rights, and delivering benefits to our peoples for many more years to come.”
In response to his appointment as Special Envoy to the United States of America, Jonas expressed: “I want to extend my gratitude to President Cyril Ramaphosa for trusting me with this significant yet challenging position.
“I will strive to foster a constructive working relationship between South Africa and the United States.
“I fully acknowledge the challenges that lie ahead, particularly in light of recent global events.
“Nonetheless, I believe we can focus on the areas of shared interests and common goals to strengthen the enduring bonds between our two nations.”
Recognizing the obstacles ahead, Jonas stated that there are no simple solutions to such intricate issues.
“I urge South Africans to practice patience and allow us the necessary time and space to engage comprehensively with various stakeholders in both the United States and South Africa,” said the former Deputy Minister of Finance.
“Any updates regarding our efforts will be shared through the Presidency and the Department of International Relations and Cooperation of the Republic of South Africa.”
