Hitchhiker Fends Off Armed Robbery with Gunfire on R550 in Gauteng

Authorities have initiated an inquest and apprehended two individuals after a robbery attempt involving a hitchhiker ended with gunfire along the R550 close to Suikerbosrand on Friday, April 11.

The altercation resulted in the death of one suspect, while two others were hospitalized under police supervision.

As reported by police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, a man accepted a ride from three individuals in a red VW Polo while hitchhiking along the N3 near Vosloorus.

During the trip, the vehicle unexpectedly deviated from its route, and the suspects allegedly pulled out knives, demanding money.

“The suspects searched the victim and took his wallet containing cash. In a bid to defend himself, the victim pulled out his licensed firearm and shot at the assailants,” Nevhuhulwi stated.

The victim’s swift response resulted in the critical shooting of one suspect on the spot, while the other two sustained serious injuries.

Both injured suspects have been arrested and are currently receiving medical care under police watch.

Police have instituted a case for armed robbery and are investigating the incident further.

Authorities are advising both drivers and hitchhikers to remain alert and refrain from accepting rides or picking up passengers under dubious circumstances.

In a different but related episode last Monday, four robbery suspects were shot and killed by Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) officers following a robbery at the Dog Box Liquor Store in Verwoerdpark, Alberton.

EMPD spokesperson Thabiso Makgato mentioned that the suspects fled in a silver Renault Triber and were tracked down by officers acting on community notifications.

A high-speed chase ensued along the N12, where the suspects fired upon law enforcement.

Police returned fire, fatally injuring four of the suspects.

A fifth suspect was shot in the leg and is presently hospitalized at Thelle Mokgoerane Hospital.
