Fire Damages Multiple Classrooms at Peter Mokaba Primary School, Arson Suspected

A fire has ravaged multiple classrooms at Peter Mokaba Primary School in Moloto, near KwaMhlanga, Mpumalanga.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, 8 February 2025.

Jasper Zwane, spokesperson for the Mpumalanga Department of Education, stated, “We received alarming reports regarding a fire at Peter Mokaba Primary School. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.”

Zwane further remarked, “The department has instructed officials to assess the damage on-site and recommend necessary actions moving forward.

“We are closely monitoring the situation…”

Authorities are urging communities to assist with the investigations.

Several residents reported being awakened by the flames.

They expressed suspicions of arson and urged police to thoroughly investigate and identify those responsible.

Local resident Maria Mahlangu shared, “We are still in shock over this act. We were asleep when we saw the blaze coming from the school.

“This is heartbreaking, as the perpetrators are disregarding the future of our children.

“We will cooperate with authorities to bring these criminals to justice.”

Johannes Mohlala, a parent at the school, expressed his confusion, saying, “We can’t comprehend why the school was subjected to this kind of destruction.

“It’s evident that our safety is also jeopardized if criminals feel free to target schools.

“We will not rest until we uncover the identities and motives of these individuals.”

Lt. Colonel Jabu Ndubane, spokesperson for the Mpumalanga police, indicated that the cause of the fire is still being investigated.

“A case of arson has been filed for further inquiries,” Lt. Colonel Ndubane confirmed.
