Commander of Police Fatally Shot in Alleged Targeted Assault in Mpumalanga
Police in Mpumalanga have launched a manhunt following the shooting death of Lieutenant-Colonel Pieter Pretorius, a 59-year-old commander of the Vehicle Identification Unit in Ermelo, in what appears to be a deliberate assault.
Reports indicate that Pretorius was on his way to meet an informant when an armed attacker ambushed him. Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane confirmed that the officer was killed while driving an official vehicle, which was found with numerous bullet holes.

“Following the shooting, the suspect allegedly escaped the scene in a white sedan,” Ndubane stated, noting that a specialized investigative team has been formed to examine the murder and locate the assailants.

Provincial Police Commissioner Promises Justice
Major General (Dr.) Zeph Mkhwanazi, the acting provincial commissioner of Mpumalanga, has condemned the shooting, labeling it as a direct assault on the state.
“This brutal act has deprived our community of a devoted officer who was dedicated to their safety,” stated Mkhwanazi. “We are confident that we will make a breakthrough soon, and the individuals responsible will be tracked down and brought to justice promptly.”

Mkhwanazi expressed his sincere condolences to Pretorius’ family, friends, and colleagues during this challenging time.
