Chief justice confirms first sitting of the National Assembly

Chief Justice Raymond Zondo has determined that that first sitting of the National Assembly will be on Friday, 14 June.

As per the Constitution, the first National Assembly sitting must be 14 days after elections are declared. The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) declared the results of the 29 May polls on 2 June.

Parliament cancels flights and accommodation for MK Party members

Parliament has called off the flight and accommodation arrangements for 58 uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party members who were to assume seats in the National Assembly.

This comes as the MK Party urged Chief Justice Raymond Zondo and Secretary to Parliament Xolile George to postpone the first sitting of the National Assembly, claiming it would not be constitutional. The party raised concerns about the discrepancies in the 29 May polls. 

Expelled MK Party founder Khumalo to attend Parliament

Expelled MK Party founder Jabulani Khumalo announced that he plans to attend the first sitting of Parliament this Friday.

Despite his expulsion and ongoing contestation of the party’s leadership, Khumalo remains on the MK Parliamentary list.

Gupta brothers denied bail in India for involvement in suicide

The two Gupta brothers, Ajay and Anil, were denied bail in India for their alleged involvement in the death of a prominent builder. 

According to a report by Times India, the district court dismissed the duo’s bail application on Friday.

R81m in loss-of-office tips: A big payday for outgoing ministers and MPs

With the elections over, outgoing cabinet ministers and Members of Parliament (MPs) will reportedly receive R81 million in out-of-office gratuities.

The Sunday Times reports that 143 MPs and cabinet ministers who will not return to parliament will receive millions for their services.
