Libbok reveals his thoughts on Nohamba’s form!
Manie Libbok has expressed his admiration for Sanele Nohamba’s recent performances as the DHL Stormers’ standout flyhalf prepares to clash with the Lions’ playmaker in Cape Town on Saturday.
South Africa’s flyhalf talent pool has seen significant growth compared to last year, with Nohamba and the Sharks’ Siya Masuku both emerging as strong contenders for national selection.
Libbok, who was the primary flyhalf in the Springboks squad for the 2023 World Cup until Handre Pollard’s return, now faces robust competition for the coveted No. 10 jersey.
Nohamba’s Impactful Play
Libbok embraces this competition as he gets ready for the final round of the Vodacom URC. Reflecting on his relationship with fellow players, he said, “I’m good friends with quite a few of the guys at the Lions. We’ve had great conversations and even some friendly matchups during alignment camps.”
He added, “Sanele is an exceptional player. I’m thrilled with his progress and how much he’s enjoying his rugby. I’m excited about the upcoming game and focused on my role.”
Libbok also highlighted Masuku’s form: “I’m very pleased with Siya Masuku’s progress. There’s always pressure, but it’s the same for all teams. Everyone is performing at their best for their unions, aiming for national selection.”
Stormers’ Playoff Preparation
Libbok’s form has peaked at a crucial time for the Stormers. Over the past three matches, he has missed only two goal attempts, one of which was a strategic long-range effort during a yellow card period.
His 11 points were pivotal in the Stormers’ victory over Connacht in Galway, securing a playoff spot in the URC.
“I’m delighted with my current kicking form,” Libbok said. “I’ve been working diligently with [kicking coach] Gareth Wright. It’s been a continuous effort, and I knew it would eventually pay off. I’m glad it’s coming together now, especially with the playoffs approaching.”
Decisive URC Round Ahead
The Stormers will face the Lions in the final URC round, with the Lions needing a victory to secure their first-ever spot in the competition’s last eight.
“We expect them to come out aggressively,” Libbok stated. “Our focus is on our own goals and what we want to achieve from this game as we head into the playoffs. The Lions have threats all over the field, from their forwards to their backline. They’ll be giving it their all, with this being their last chance to make the playoffs.”
Rising Competition at Flyhalf
Libbok views the increased competition for the flyhalf position positively, believing it drives players to excel. “There’s always pressure in this competition. The overall quality of rugby is very high, so everyone is pushing themselves,” he noted.
Looking ahead, Libbok is optimistic and supportive of his rivals’ futures. “I’m happy for Sanele and where he is in his career. I wish him all the best moving forward,” he said.
