BOMB THREATS at several Boksburg schools cause for concern

Gauteng Education MEC, Matome Chiloane is concerned after at least four schools in Boksburg and others in parts of Ekurhuleni received bomb threats on Friday 2 December 2022.

Bomb threats cause panic among learners

Despite the fact that no threats were found at the schools, learners from Boksburg High School and School of Achievement were affected.

Due to security measures implemented by the South African Police Service (SAPS) to ensure the safety of all learners, these students had to begin their exam papers later than scheduled.

At this point, there is no further information on what the threat was or where it originated.

It did, however, cause panic in Boksburg schools.

“The emergence of this security threat is quite concerning, especially as it affected the exams of our matriculants. We appreciate the assistance from law enforcement agencies who prioritised the safety of our schools,” said MEC Chiloane.

Principal speaks about the threat

Enoch Thango, Principal of Boksburg High School, told the Boksburg Advertiser that they had received a call from what sounded like a young man who said there was a bomb in the school.

Thango told the publication that he phoned the Boksburg SAPS but the call went unanswered.

“Fortunately, one of our SGB members is an EMPD officer and she advised us to contact the EMPD.” Thango said.

He said that they evacuated learners onto the field.

The bomb disposal unit of the EMPD (Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department) arrived and searched the school grounds.

Fortunately, nothing was discovered.

According to a spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Metro Police, Kelebogile Thepa, they were coordinating with police and K9 unit personnel to respond to the schools that had received bomb threats.
