The Eastern Cape police have opened an inquest docket after a newborn baby was found in a bin inside a Cleary Park fast-food franchise on Sunday night, 8 May.
NEWBORN BABY FOUND IN RESTAURANT BIN
South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said an employee at the restaurant made the disturbing discovery at approximately 20:30 on Sunday.
A newborn baby girl wrapped in a plastic bag was allegedly discovered inside the sanitary bin in the women’s toilet.
“The umbilical cord was still attached to the child. The baby was in a partial state of decomposition and staff became suspicious after a constant foul smell lingered in the toilet,” said Naidu.
Details remain scant at this stage of the investigation. The Gelvandale police station has opened an inquest docket and is appealing to the public to help track down the mother.
Members of the public who are “suspicious of any female who may have given birth and there is no sign of a child” are encouraged to contact the investigating officer Detective Warrant Officer Edman Mandeka at 078-370-9785.
