Biden failed to get summit agreement from China’s Xi Jinping: report

Chinese President Xi Jinping appears to have rebuffed, for now, a suggestion from President Joe Biden for an in-person summit, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday, citing people briefed on last week’s 90-minute call between the two leaders. Five of those people said Xi pushed for a lighter tone out of the U.S., where Biden’s administration has been critical of Beijing over its treatment of Uyghurs and pro-democracy supporters in Hong Kong, for example. As for the summit possibility, another person briefed on the call said that Biden wasn’t expecting a quick answer from Xi, who hasn’t been out of the country since early 2020.
